The starting point for most prospective parents is to visit the school.
If you would like to do this, all you have to do is telephone the school office to make an appointment to see the school on a normal working day. You will have a chance to meet the Headmaster and to sample the friendly atmosphere which is our hallmark.
Then, if you like what you see, you pay a registration fee, which ensures that your child will be invited to the 4+ assessments in the January before he or she is due to join. Offers are sent out towards the end of January, and you usually have about a week to secure your child’s place by paying the initial deposit.
In practice, this means that the class list is normally complete by the middle of February and parents are then invited to a talk by Miss Buckby ( Head of Foundation Stage) in early June. This talk answers all of your questions about the practical details of your child’s first year at school. It also gives you a chance to meet other parents and to exchange numbers, so that the children can get together during the summer and become friends.
Most children join the school in the September after their fourth birthday. Typically, we assess about 60 pupils for our Reception class, which has a maximum size of 20. We are a family school, so we give preference to siblings.
When we assess the children we take into account their age on the day of the test because these are very young children and we do not want to disadvantage pupils who have a summer birthday. We assess their visual memory, auditory memory, language development, pencil control and social skills.
Each year we may be able to offer a very limited number of places to older children. In this case, we will assess their English (both written and spoken), Maths and Reading standard. We will usually invite a prospective pupil to spend a morning with us so that the assessment is more relaxed and the child has an opportunity to get a feel for the school.
